Diabetes and Metabolic Care Retreat at University Hospitals

Individuals with pre-diabetes, diabetes or obesity are invited to register for a free one-day Wellness Retreat to learn how to experience healthy living through self-care. Hosted by the University Hospitals Diabetes and Metabolic Care Center, the retreat uses person-centered care methods to increase attendee confidence and knowledge in the self-management of diabetes, prediabetes and obesity.

Diabetes: An Epidemic in America

  • In 2019, 37.1 million adults in the U.S. aged 18 years and older were living with diabetes, while another 96 million adult Americans were prediabetic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projects that approximately one third of Americans will have diabetes by 2050 if current trends continue.
  • The number of Americans with diabetes is projected to double or triple by 2050.

Retreat Overview

Drawing on components of the American Diabetes Association's diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) education program, our wellness retreat features seminars, demonstrations and activities focusing on important diabetes, prediabetes and obesity self-management topics, including:

Pillars of Success

The retreat program is built around four pillars for optimizing health and wellness:

  • Body: Nourishing your body through nutrition and exercise.
  • Mind: Empowering your mind through relaxation and sleep.
  • Soul: Getting in tune with your emotions, thoughts and perspectives.
  • Life: Looking after your family and financial well-being.

Participants are encouraged to engage with each other to discuss their own challenges, successes and anything else related to living with diabetes, prediabetes or obesity, as well as the prevention of complications associated with these conditions.

In addition to the in-person retreat, the care team will offer three optional virtual touchpoint/follow-up sessions in the 12 months following the retreat.

Staff

The retreat staff primarily consist of doctors and educators from the UH Diabetes and Metabolic Care Center. In addition, staff may include fitness/wellness coaches and other experts specializing in areas other than diabetes and metabolic conditions.

Retreat Research Study

Although not required to participate, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a research study to gather information on and improve the effectiveness of wellness retreats. The research study will include surveys and the collection of data from past and future doctor visits.

While all retreat attendees will have access to a free continuous glucose monitor, study participants may also receive a smart scale and blood pressure cuff.


Who Can Participate?

Anyone 18 years or older with a diagnosis of pre-diabetes, diabetes or obesity is welcome to attend. There is no cost to attend. Register today to be notified of upcoming locations and dates once they are announced.
