Dr. Kikano: Leading UH Physician and Donor

“I’m proud to support the Discover the Difference campaign because University Hospitals has been my home since I completed my medical training here in 1988. As a UH physician and leader, I also understand how important philanthropic support is in helping us provide the very best care to patients of all ages and backgrounds.”

As Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at UH Cleveland Medical Center, George Kikano, MD, is inspired by the diversity of patients he treats. He diagnoses conditions that range from the common cold to cancer and advanced heart disease and cares for patients of all backgrounds, from some of the wealthiest in the nation to the most underprivileged in our community.

Dr. Kikano pioneered UH’s Medical House Calls program, an innovative effort to bring primary care services to homebound seniors who otherwise would not have access to care. Dr. Kikano, also Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, is proud that the program is now in its seventh year and serves more than 400 patients. He is extraordinarily grateful for the support of the UH donor community and a number of local foundations that fund the Medical House Calls program almost entirely.

Dr. Kikano also played an important role in establishing a partnership between University Hospitals and Care Alliance Health Center, the leading provider of medical and dental services to those experiencing homelessness or living in and around public housing in Cleveland. The partnership was recently strengthened through a $1 million gift from the Saint Luke’s Foundation. The gift is helping UH expand residency training in Family Medicine and focus more attention on the unique health care needs of underserved populations. “The remarkable generosity of the Saint Luke’s Foundation is helping us better meet growing demand for community-based family physicians,” Dr. Kikano says.
