David Ferguson: Going the Distance

“On the anniversary of my surgery every year, I think about how fortunate I was to come through it all. I owe so much to University Hospitals.”

David Ferguson, a member of the UH Ahuja Medical Center Leadership Council and UH Digestive Health & Surgical Innovation Leadership Council, developed ulcerative colitis in his 40s. He lived with the debilitating disease, an inflammatory condition of the intestine, for more than 20 years. Eventually he developed colon cancer, a common consequence of the disease. In 2007, he chose UH and Conor Delaney, MD, PhD, for the complex operation he needed to remove his colon.

More than six years after his surgery, Mr. Ferguson bicycles more than 20 miles a day and is enjoying retirement. “I support the Digestive Health Institute because Dr. Conor Delaney changed my life. Now it’s my turn to help him change the lives of others,” he says.
