Barbara Ruhlman: Strengthening the maternity program at UH MacDonald Women's Hospital

“My parents instilled in me the importance of returning what you can to help other people. I am fortunate to be able to support this hospital that I love.”
– Barbara Peterson Ruhlman

Longtime benefactor and Chair of the UH MacDonald Women’s Health Leadership Council, Barbara Peterson Ruhlman has lent her support and leadership to University Hospitals for more than 65 years. HerBarbara Ruhlman service to UH began when she was a high school volunteer at UH MacDonald Women’s Hospital and continues today with a $6 million gift to support UH’s obstetrics and gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and fertility and maternal fetal medicine programs. Barbara’s extraordinarily generous donation has been matched by a $1 million gift from the Rainbow Babies & Children’s Foundation, raising the value of her gift to $7 million and bringing her lifetime giving to over $10 million.

Barbara has been a leading supporter of UH since 2008 when she made her first significant gift to the Discover the Difference Campaign. The Thomas F. Peterson Foundation, led by Barbara and named in honor of her father, a Cleveland industrialist and philanthropist, contributed $2.5 million to fund the renovation of the 11th floor of Alfred and Norma Lerner Tower on the UH Cleveland Medical Center campus. The space is named the Barbara Peterson Ruhlman Conference Center in honor of her generosity.  The same year, Barbara made a $1.5 million gift to establish the Barbara Peterson Ruhlman Chair in Orthopaedics at UH Cleveland Medical Center.
