Young Pageant Winner Gives to Rainbow

Marcello Verde

Big things come in small packages. Just ask anyone who knows Marcello Verde of Vermilion, who recently collected 114 boxes of Band-aids and 71 packs of stickers for patients at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

At just 6 years old, Marcello is among the youngest donors to start a Circle of Friends for Rainbow. Circle of Friends is comprised of any individual or group who raise funds or gather donations for UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, typically by hosting an event. Marcello tied his Circle of Friends event to PURE American, a Christian-based pageant for boys and girls ages birth through 8 years old. Pageant contestants such as Marcello are required to support a philanthropic cause, and Marcello chose the Child Life Department at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Child Life accepts donations of new toys, games and other items for kids receiving care at the hospital.

Thanks to Marcello’s kindness and enthusiasm for Rainbow, children at the hospital can choose from a wide variety of colorful stickers for their artwork and can use the Band-aids to make their teddy bears and baby dolls feel better. Marcello is already thinking about his next fundraiser and pageant.

No doubt the judges were impressed with Marcello’s fundraising success: In August, he was crowned “King” at the PURE American pageant.
