Meeting a courageous young customer has inspired Michael Thompson, Manager of the Diamond Centre Dairy Queen in Mentor, to step up fundraising efforts for DQ’s Miracle Treat Day on July 30. Miracle Treat Day is an annual event that raises funds for UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital through Blizzard sales.

Thompson met 9-year-old Jacob when he stopped by DQ with his family for ice cream. Thompson noticed that the family was snapping photos in front of the wall of yellow Miracle Balloons, each one representing a customer donation to Rainbow.  Thompson and his staff were so honored to meet Jacob, who has been featured by Rainbow for his courageous battle with cancer, that they bought the family lunch and began planning ways to make this year’s Miracle Treat Day the biggest and best yet.

“It made our week to meet such an incredible young man who is one of the many miracles from Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital,” said Thompson. “Thinking of kids like Jacob inspires me to push our staff to make this day successful – not just for the money we will raise but also to push awareness of Rainbow and how great it is.”

Thompson speaks from experience. When he was just a year old, he was taken by Life Flight to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital following an accident. “I am forever grateful for the care I received,” he said.

For Miracle Treat Day, Thompson and his staff plan to raise at least $2,500 through Blizzard sales, a cake raffle and bake sale. Other events include face painting, live music and kid-friendly games.

“Many miracles have come from Rainbow. Knowing that we can help to create those miracles makes it worth the effort.  I only wish we could do more,” Thompson said.

“Miracle Treat Day shows us that people care and want to help,” said Heather Goss, Jacob’s mom. “It helps Jacob’s spirits and his healing too.”
