This spring, University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center was awarded $104,939 from Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio in support of Project TEMPLE, a breast cancer education and outreach program that includes free mammograms for underserved women in the community. This is the ninth year that Seidman Cancer Center has been a Komen awardee.

Project TEMPLE (which stands for Teaching, Educating, Mentoring, Preventing, Learning and Empowering) reaches into targeted neighborhoods and provides education about breast cancer risk factors and the power of early detection to save lives. Paying particular attention to the needs of the African-American population in Greater Cleveland, Project TEMPLE has touched the lives of nearly 4,000 women.

Project TEMPLE is part of Save Our Sisters (SOS), an ongoing initiative by Seidman Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach in collaboration with Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Services, Inc. and St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. SOS programs aim to reduce cancer disparities through screening and education.

Komen Northeast Ohio’s support for UH Seidman Cancer Center’s breast cancer initiative is made possible by community support, including participation in your local Race for the Cure. Please join this annual fundraiser at these upcoming events:

Akron Race for the Cure, Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Firestone Stadium and Firestone Country Club; and Cleveland Race for the Cure, Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Malls B and C in Cleveland.
