Laughter: The Best Rx

Get ready to laugh out loud during the 12th annual Comics for Kids, a benefit for UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. This fun-filled event on October 21 at Hilarities Pickwick and Frolic (2035 East 4th Street, Cleveland) includes a cocktail party with cash bar, live music, silent auction and a live comedy show featuring headliner Mike Cheselka, a practicing attorney who toured for nearly two decades as a stand-up comedian before getting his law degree. Cheselka began his career in comedy as one of the original “Outlaws of Comedy” with the late Sam Kinison. He is a regular at Hilarities in Cleveland and appears weekly on Cleveland’s Fox TV8 morning show.

We spoke with event founder Rob Telecky, a project coordinator at University Hospitals and busy local stand-up comic, to learn more about this funny fundraiser:

Tell us about Comics for Kids – when did it start and why?

“The first Comics for Kids was assembled as a fluke more than a decade ago. I had retired from pursuing a career in stand-up comedy but wanted to keep that part of my life alive. A coworker suggested that we do a comedy show, sell tickets and give the money to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Long story short, we raised $2,500 that first year. The event keeps growing and this year we anticipate raising between $40,000 and $50,000.”

What else goes on that night?

“For the price of a $40 ticket, guests are invited to a pre-show cocktail party at Pickwick & Frolic starting at 6 p.m. The party includes live jazzy/blues music by my sister Sharon Telecky, food and dessert stations, a 50/50 raffle and a cash bar. The show begins at 8 p.m.”

What is this year’s theme?

“The theme is the same every year: Laughter is the Best Medicine. We believe that we are putting on a comedy show for anyone who wants to come out and forget about the problems of the day or week and just laugh.”
