Getting Into the Spirit

Halloween came early to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. In mid-October, Spirit Halloween threw a party at the hospital and brought along colorful costumes for patients and their families to wear and keep.

Since 2006, Spirit Halloween stores in Northeast Ohio have been raising funds for UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. The New Jersey-based chain of more than 1,150 Halloween stores gathers donations in-store and online through its hugely popular Spirit of Children program and supports more than 130 hospitals nationwide and in Canada. The fundraisers have had a tremendous impact, contributing nearly $234,000 to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital alone.

All donations made at local Spirit Halloween stores go directly to the hospital, benefiting the Family and Child Life Services department. Spirit Halloween and its vendors pay for the annual Halloween party themselves – the money does not come from in-store customer donations.

“Spirit of Children brings fun and funding to hospitals at Halloween and all year long,” says Jimmy Hignite, district manager. “Our mission is to make hospital stays less scary for kids and their families.”
