Meet Miracle Story Julie

Diagnosis

Julie

A few months after her life-changing surgery, Julie is thrilled with the results.

At 18 months of age, Julie’s was admitted to the hospital to be treated for a common childhood viral infection known as croup. After noticing that Julie’s facial features were under-developed and abnormal, doctors suggested her parents seek specialty care. Rainbow doctors soon diagnosed Julie with Crouzon syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that prevents the skull from growing normally and affects the shape of the head and face.

Treatment

Surgeons performed Julie’s first major procedure to correct the growth failure of her upper jaw, nose and cheek bones when she was 4 years old. As her face advanced with age, Julie began to develop the same deformities she had after birth. At age 25, doctors could not just advance Julie’s face because it would cause problems with her bite. They performed a remarkably unique life-changing combination of plastic and oral surgeries that corrected her visual problems, opened her airway and corrected her bite all at the same time.

Today

Eight months after surgery and Julie feels amazing, “a hundred times better.” Julie could not be happier with the results and is grateful for her doctor’s skill. She notices that when she goes out to the store or shopping mall, nobody stares at her anymore and that has given her confidence and self esteem a boost. Julie is now able to enjoy the simple pleasure of biting into a cheeseburger!
