Ask the Experts - Breast Cancer Awareness Month
When should a woman have her first mammogram?
You should have your first, yearly mammogram at age 40.
According to Drs. Amitabh Goel and Benjamin Bryant – general surgeons at University Hospitals Geneva and Conneaut Medical Centers – you should have your first, yearly mammogram at age 40. If you have a parent or sibling with breast cancer, start ten years prior to the age she was diagnosed, but no later than age 40. And be aware that digital mammography, available at both University Hospitals locations in Ashtabula County, provides more detailed images for earlier detection ... which is the best protection.
