Electronic resources, the Internet, and email have an enormous impact on the practice of medicine in the 21st century. Medical practice in the new information age requires the integration of electronic resources into the daily practice of medicine.
The Samuel J. Horwitz, MD, Pediatric Learning Center is available to residents at any time, day or night. Resources provided through the Learning Center include:
- 580+ online/electronic full text journals/serials
- Over 350 standard texts and reference works
- Database subscriptions including UpToDate, Ovid Online and MD Consult
- Interlibrary loan services
- 7 computer work stations
- Fax machine
- Printer and photocopier with PDF and E-mail capabilities

These resources are used to directly inform and enhance patient care at bedside. For example, residents may review a patient's laboratory findings on the hospital computer, shift screens to review the latest evidence-based literature, incorporate these findings into their medical decisions, and print a copy of key references on the medical ward. Information is available "just in time," exactly at the moment of greatest interest and optimally suited for patient care.
Residents can work individually or collaborative in the Pediatric Learning Center. In addition, residents have available to them the Health Sciences Library at CWRU. A full time Medical Librarian staffs the Center and is available to assist individuals and groups to navigate the UH and CWRU library systems, as well as provide individual and group training on any of these resources. The librarian is also available to assist with or perform searches of the medical literature.
