Congenital Malformation

Children born with abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord have congenital malformations.

Some more common problems that require neurosurgical intervention include

  • Hydrocephalus (excess cerebrospinal spinal fluid in the brain),
  • Dandy-Walker malformations,
  • Spinal Bifida (inadequate closure of the spinal canal), and
  • Craniosynostosis.

Other less common problems include encephaloceles, schizencephaly and vein of Galen malformations.

As neurosurgeons, we work closely with our colleagues in pediatric neurology, pediatric neuroradiology, pediatric plastic surgery, obstetrics, and neonatology to provide coordinated individualized state-of-the-art care for infants and children with congenital problems, and for their families.
