UH Conneaut Medical Center doctor performs ‘personalized’ knee replacement surgery

University Hospitals Conneaut Medical Center’s Ohio Bone & Joint Institute has established the regions first anatomic knee replacement surgery using Conformis technology. William A. Seeds, MD, Medical Director of UH Conneaut Medical Center’s Ohio Bone & Joint Institute, performed the first procedure March 17.

This state-of-the-art device uses “image-to-implant” technology which enables a 3-dimensional implant sculpting based on the patient’s anatomy; bone and cartilage-preserving articular repair; and a simplified surgical technique.

“This approach is unique due to the milling work and tools specifically designed for the patient,” says Dr. Seeds. “This technology is the twenty-first century solution to knee placements.”

There are several advantages to using this new technology including a personalized fit; smaller incision; less soft tissue resection; replacement of only what is necessary; and this surgery preserves the option for future surgery if need be.

“We are very proud to offer a procedure this technologically advanced to our patients,” says Robert G. David, President, UH Conneaut Medical Center and UH Geneva Medical Centers. “Our focus is to continually offer the highest quality of health care close to home.”

Dr. Seeds first patient, Linda Goss, agrees, “The Ohio Bone & Joint Institute is a gem in our area,” says Goss. “I tell my colleagues at work that if you have to have surgery, go there!” Goss is an art teacher at Geneva High School, and is back to teaching just four weeks after surgery.

The Ohio Bone & Joint Institute is focused on providing innovative treatment of orthopaedic diseases, conditions and injuries. Using individualized clinical capabilities and therapies, positive patient outcomes increase greatly. Services include diagnostic imaging (MRI and CT scan), non-invasive treatments, arthroscopy, arthroplasty (joint replacement) and rehabilitation/outpatient programs.

Jo Anne Surbella, MBA, RN, Director of Operations and Nursing at UH Conneaut Medical Center, attributes the human interaction patients receive at the Ohio Bone & Joint Institute to what sets them apart. “Our nurse to guest ratio is well below the national average and our guest satisfaction rating consistently ranks in the 99th percentile of any hospital of comparable size,” says Surbella. “At our institute you are our guest.”
