When you hear a diagnosis of cancer, the emotional and social issues you and your family face are every bit as complicated as your child’s medical needs. A great deal of the work we do centers on helping you and your family survive the crisis.
Our team of dedicated specialists coordinates efforts to deliver comprehensive care for every aspect of your family’s needs. We even design special services. For example, Rainbow created a support network to help families with non-medical services—social workers to help with family interactions, financial representatives to counsel on tough issues, child life specialists to help with inevitable emotional challenges, etc.
In addition, we now also engage in ongoing research for developing innovative therapies and for addressing safety issues such as complications or risks that may be associated with medications.
The Division of Hematology/Oncology operates an important program that involves all the unique aspects of care at Rainbow and all the special programs and services in University Hospital’s Ireland Cancer Center—which is one of only about 40 centers across the United States that are designated and approved as comprehensive centers by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology is a major referral center for children with:
non-malignant hematologic disorders, including:
- hemophilia
- sickle cell anemia
- thalassemia
- aplastic anemia
- neutrophil disorders
- anemia
- ITP coagulation disorders
Inpatient care is provided for all patients on a specialized care unit located on the second floor of Rainbow. This unit is staffed by highly trained specialized pediatric oncology nurses, Child Life Workers, a dedicated pharmacist, and a team of physicians.
Outpatients are seen in the Ireland Cancer Center Ambulatory Unit on Bolwell 6, where transfusion, infusion chemotherapy and procedures can be performed without hospital admission. This unit is staffed by highly trained specialized pediatric oncology nurses, and has an onsite pharmacy and laboratory.
- All physicians are board-certified in pediatric hematology/oncology.
- All physicians are approved providers for Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps.
- Several distinct programs are incorporated into the Division, including four Centers of Excellence.
