Sequential Bilateral Cochlear Implant

On Tuesday, February 24, 2009 a Sequential Bilateral Cochlear Implant was performed from University Hospitals Case Medical Center Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio.

Cliff A. Megerian, M.D., FACS, The Richard and Patricia Pogue Chair in Auditory Surgery and Hearing Sciences and Medical Director, Cochlear Implant Program at University Hospitals, performed the procedure and provided a detailed narration.

Audiologist Gail Murray, Ph.D., Clinical Director of the Cochlear Implant Program, supplied additional commentary.

A cochlear implant is an electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to children who are deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. The implant bypasses the damaged part of the ear and sends digital signals directly to the auditory nerve to provide a clearer understanding of sound and speech.
