At ICC, our physicians and researchers are constantly developing and studying new procedures, tests, tools and medications that could help our patients with cancer.
These procedures and treatments are tested through “clinical trials” — scientific studies that research the new techniques by utilizing them in people who have various kinds of cancer.
The clinical trial is designed to show whether a new method of treatment or drug is better, safer or more effective than existing treatments. They are designed to improve current treatments or compare seemingly equal treatments. Research is carried out according to strict scientific and ethical principles to protect patients and produce sound results.
If you decide to participate in a trial, you may be treated with a new type of therapy that is unavailable at most other hospitals. However, there is no way of knowing ahead of time whether the new approach will be any better than existing kinds of treatment.
There are many reasons to consider joining a trial. Some patients feel it holds the best hope for treating their particular situation. Others hope to benefit personally but also want to participate as a means of helping to improve the future care of cancer patients. It is not possible to predict if patients will benefit from participation in clinical trials. Some clinical trials offer no benefit at all.
