The UH Clinical Neurophysiology Course is an intensive 8 week course designed to teach core competencies in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology.
Trainees include research and clinical neurophysiology fellows, child neurology fellows, PGY-3 neurology residents, and international students.
The morning sessions include didactic lectures and group discussions of unknown EEGs. Afternoons are spent in the routine and video EEG reading sessions, as well as in sleep and epilepsy clinics under the supervision of teaching faculty.
The course begins with an introduction to EEG electronics and progresses to basics of electroencepalography, EEG and seizure classification, and sleep.
During the second half of the course, lectures focus on clinical aspects of epilepsy including seizures across the life span, from neonates to the elderly, as well as women’s issues and teratogenesis. Subsequently, antiepileptic medications, pre-surgical evaluation including functional neuroimaging and neuropsychological evaluation, as well as, surgical options are discussed.
During the last week, trainees are exposed to evoked potentials and intra-operative monitoring. The course ends with a final exam.
