Research and innovation

University Hospitals Research & Innovation Center is the largest biomedical research center in the state of Ohio, and one of the top 15 in the country. Our Cardiovascular Research Center works specifically to improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. We use translational research (the clinical application of scientific medical research from lab to bedside) and advancements in biomedicine to improve industry standards and quality of patient care.

Clinical trials are conducted to answer specific questions about new therapies or methods of using established treatments. Current clinical trials are being performed across a wide range of cardiovascular medicine, including CV imaging, cardiothoracic surgery and vascular surgery. Additionally, University Hospitals Case Medical Center is a national site for stem cell research, and leader of the Ohio Cell-based Therapy Consortium. Current trials are underway to examine cell-based therapy for ischemic heart and peripheral vascular disease.

We also offer the full spectrum of diagnostic and treatment technologies, including the NOGA® Cardiac Navigation System, the most advanced imaging technology currently available. Additional diagnostic techniques include CT scans, MRIs, echocardiograms, cardiac catheterizations, an intercardiac electrophysiology lab, nuclear ventriculography and vascular testing.

The American Heart Association recently awarded our approach to health care with their Sustained Performance Achievement Award. This award recognizes hospitals that have met AHA guidelines for high performance and compliance with evidence-based best practices for two years consecutively. The University Hospitals Heart & Vascular Institute is one of only 12 hospitals in the country, and the only hospital in the three-state Ohio Valley to receive the award.
