With particular expertise in treating women during pregnancy and older
age, the Women’s Heart & Vascular Center offers programs in the
following areas:
Heart surgery
Our nationally-renowned Heart Surgery Center diagnoses and treats the most complex cases of valvular disease, coronary heart disease, congenital heart disease, heart rhythm disorders and heart failure. We can treat your condition with a combination of traditional procedures and latest advances, including:
- Simple to the most complex heart surgeries
- Use of laser transmyocardial revascularization techniques for end-stage heart disease
- Use of stentless valves for valve replacement
- A variety of ventricular assist devices as a bridge to heart transplantation or as destination therapy
- Methylene blue for Vasoplegia syndrome after cardiac surgery.
Congenital heart disease
The Congenital Heart Disease Center offers world-renowned experts who specialize in every aspect of CHD. Our multidisciplinary approach starts at the earliest recognition of CHD and continues throughout the patient’s lifetime.
Care is coordinated by our team of cardiovascular specialists, interventionalists, electrophysiologists, congenital cardiothoracic surgeons, pulmonologists and radiologists. We employ state-of-the-art diagnostics including 3-D imaging, exercise stress tests and electrophysiology studies. Advanced therapies range from catheter interventions, ablation therapy and device implants, to congenital cardiothoracic surgery. Our acclaimed management program closely monitors progress, and helps prevent future problems with the application of best practices in cardiovascular disease prevention.
Advanced heart failure and transplant
Heart failure patients often experience subsequent, highly disabling recurrences. Almost half of heart failure patients 70 years of age or older that are admitted to the hospital will require repeat hospital admission within 90 days. By combining innovative medical and surgical technology with individualized counseling, our advanced heart failure team can help improve symptoms, and lower the odds of recurrence altogether. We offer a range of innovative therapies for advanced heart failure, including transplants and mechanical assist programs.
The Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Center team, led by James Fang, MD and Adnan Cobanoglu, MD, proudly raises advanced care to an unprecedented level.
Interventional cardiology
Heart disease comes in different forms including coronary heart disease (CHD), valvular heart disease, vascular heart disease and heart failure. Each requires a distinct course of treatment, and an invasive procedure may not be right for you, especially if your arteries are affected.
Using the most effective diagnostic techniques including coronary angiographies and cardiac catheterizations, our interventional cardiologists can view the heart’s arteries and other important organs; determine the extent and location of any blockage; and test heart-functioning. We specialize in non-invasive interventional procedures including coronary atherectomies, coronary artery stents, valvuloplasties, and left and right heart catheterizations.
Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation
Electrophysiology
The Electrophysiology Center treats every type of heart rhythm irregularity, from life threatening conditions like congestive heart failure and ventricular tachycardia; to less severe disorders such as atrial arrhythmias.
Treatment begins with a comprehensive medical exam and review of your previous records; after which we determine the exact nature of your arrhythmia and potential strategies to correct it. You will have access to our state-of-the-art facilities and the newest innovations in diagnostics such as Holter monitors, intracardiac electrophysiology and CT scans; and proven, cutting-edge therapies including radiofrequency catheter ablation and cardiac resychnronization therapy.
Vascular
The Vascular center at University Hospitals is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of blood vessel disease. Our board-certified surgeons and anesthesiologists specialize in a comprehensive range of vascular disorders, and collaborate to maximize outcomes.
Procedures are performed in our state-of-the-art Vascular Diagnostic Laboratory which includes ultrasound / non-invasive diagnostic testing of arteries and veins. Our lab is accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Labs in the areas of intracranial and extracranial cerebrovascular disease, abdominal vascular disease and extremity arterial and venous diseases.
The combination of a multi-disciplinary approach, innovative technology and our passion to help patients provides you with the highest possible level of comfort and convenience.
Cardiovascular imaging
Precise diagnostic techniques combined with our cardiovascular expertise help to pinpoint existing or potential problems faster and more accurately. Patients can also benefit from the latest clinical trials in which our CV imaging specialists participate on an ongoing basis.
We employ commonly used techniques and advanced cardiovascular diagnostics to evaluate PVD/PAD, heart function, heart failure, valve function, cardiac ischemia and atherosclerosis. Non-invasive imaging is especially optimized for pre-op valve assessment and to assess myocardial viability. The non-invasive diagnostic services that we currently offer include:
- CT Scan
- MRI
- Nuclear Ventriculography
- Echocardiograms
- Non-invasive vascular ultrasound
