Adult Joint Replacement

The Promising Future

Our research scientists are involved in developing tomorrow’s arthritis treatments and joint replacement implants. At the same time, our staffers are engaged in multiple research studies that are leading the way to further advances.

As a patient of our Division, you benefit from our lengthy tradition of innovation, scientific leadership, and expertise in patient care. Our surgeons were among the first worldwide to perform total hip replacement surgery in 1969. Since then, they have been on the forefront of Total Joint Replacement innovation. Research in our Division not only has enhanced the quality of our work, but the work of surgeons across the world. Our joint replacement surgeons have been recognized nationally for their outstanding clinical results.

Today, that emphasis on innovation is stronger than ever, as all members of our Division take specialty Fellowship training in adult reconstructive or joint replacement surgery. Not only do our surgeons perform advanced minimally invasive joint replacement and computer-assisted surgery, they also use new ceramic and plastic materials in much of their work.

As a result of such advances, our Division has an exceptionally large and growing volume of joint surgeries, performing thousands of such operations each year - among the highest number of any hospital in America and the Division consistently ranks in outcomes as one of the best programs in the state of Ohio.

Another reason for our standing with patients and peers is our multidisciplinary approach. We combine staff from different specialties, including surgeons, radiologists, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, and psychologists.

Conditions Commonly Treated:

Types of Joint-Preserving Procedures

When joint replacement surgery is not an option, we recommend joint-preserving procedures, such as:

  • Realignment Osteotomy – to help shift weight to a normal part of a joint
  • Joint Debridement –Removing harmful fragments and tissue from around the joint

Such measures can potentially correct problems and delay or even eliminate the need for future joint replacement surgery.
