We specialize in the following conditions:
- Hypertension: high blood pressure
- Heart attack: a heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when an area of heart muscle dies or is permanently damaged because of an inadequate supply of oxygen to that area.
- Heart failure: (also called congestive heart failure) a life-threatening condition in which the heart can no longer pump enough blood to the rest of the body.
- Cardiac arrhythmia: any disorder of your heart rate or heart rhythm, such as beating too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or irregularly.
- Coronary heart disease (CHD): a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. CHD is also called coronary artery disease.
- Peripheral vascular disease (PVD): any disease or disorder of the circulatory system outside of the brain and heart that is caused by build up of fatty material within the vessels, called atherosclerosis.
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm: when a blood vessel becomes abnormally large or balloons outward. The abdominal aorta is a large blood vessel that supplies blood to your abdomen, the pelvis, and legs.
- Thoracic aneurysm: an aortic aneurysm that is located in the chest.
Heart disorders and vascular disorders require different treatments.
University Hospitals Richmond Medical Center diagnoses and treats disorders of both the heart (cardiac) and the circulatory system (vascular), which comprises veins, arteries and capillaries. Heart disorders are diagnosed and treated differently than vascular disorders. The following sections will describe the various procedures used for each.
