Geauga Medical Center
Entrust your health to the medical center that ranks among the top 10% for heart attack care.

Your University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center care team includes board-certified cardiologists, vascular surgeons, interventionalists and intensivists; plus highly- trained cardiac and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses. We rank among the top 10% of all hospitals submitting data to the Hospital Quality Alliance, and are in 100% compliance with the 6 key measures for care of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack). We specialize in the following conditions:

  • Hypertension: high blood pressure.
  • Heart attack: a heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when an area of heart muscle dies or is permanently damaged because of an inadequate supply of oxygen to that area.
  • Heart failure: (also called congestive heart failure) a life-threatening condition in which the heart can no longer pump enough blood to the rest of the body.
  • Cardiac arrhythmia: any disorder of your heart rate or heart rhythm, such as beating too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or irregularly.
  • Coronary heart disease (CHD): a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. CHD is also called coronary artery disease.
  • Peripheral vascular disease: any disease or disorder of the circulatory system outside of the brain and heart that is caused by build up of fatty material within the vessels, called atherosclerosis.
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: a widening, stretching, or ballooning of the aorta. There are several causes of abdominal aortic aneurysm, but the most common results from atherosclerotic disease. As the aorta gets progressively larger over time there is increased chance of rupture.

Our state-of-the-art facilities ensure a precise diagnosis and the highest-quality surgical care.

  • Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory: opened in 2004, our Cardiac Catheterization Lab is the first and only such facility in Geauga County. It features fully-integrated digital equipment for capturing and storing images of coronary vessels.
  • Vascular Laboratory: provides non-invasive exams, such as arterial flow studies and vein mapping, to diagnose conditions that interfere with blood flow.
  • Specialized Nursing Units: inpatient care is delivered in a newly-renovated medical-surgical unit with telemetry monitoring equipment; and an expanded 12-bed universal ICU.

We employ a range of innovative diagnostic and evaluation techniques; and proven treatments to clear blocked arteries.

  • Echocardiography: a test that uses sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart. The picture is much more detailed than an x-ray image and involves no radiation exposure.
  • Electrocardiogram: a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart including rate and regularity of beats; size and position of the chambers; heart damage; and effects of regulating drugs or devices.
  • Cardiac catheterization for diagnosis of arterial blockages: Cardiac catheterization involves passing a catheter (a thin flexible tube) through the blood vessel to the coronary arteries with the aid of a special x-ray machine.
  • Coumadin therapy: Coumadin (warfarin) prevents blood from clotting, which predisposes those taking it to bleed. Coumadin interacts with many other drugs and has several side effects; therefore it should be used only when its benefits outweigh the risk of side effects.
  • Coronary angioplasty: a medical procedure in which a balloon is used to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels of the heart (coronary arteries); and
  • Stents: a stent is a tiny metal or plastic tube that is placed into an artery, blood vessel, or other duct (such as one that carries urine) to hold the structure open, thus restoring circulation.
    • Carotid artery stenting: a procedure in which your vascular surgeon inserts a slender, metal-mesh tube (stent) which expands inside your carotid artery to increase blood flow in areas blocked by plaque.
  • Vascular surgery: a procedure used to treat arteries that become blocked through a process called atherosclerosis, which means hardening of the arteries.
