Critical, Round-the-Clock Monitoring
Careful monitoring of patients is a crucial part of what happens in the Neurosciences Critical Care Center.  Observing patients’ minute-to-minute progress allows specialists to step in immediately if a procedure or medication is needed to preserve or restore brain function.

Sophisticated monitoring in the Center includes:
  • CT perfusion studies – to measure blood flow in the brain with a CT scanner
  • MRI perfusion studies – checks the flow of blood to normal and diseased tissues with magnetic resonance imaging
  • Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography – Has a variety of uses including, detecting blocked arteries in the brain, intraoperative monitoring, and measurement of dynamic cerebrovascular responses
  • Video EEG monitoring – a specialized form of EEG testing that allows physicians to learn more about seizures by viewing them directly
  • Intracranial pressure monitoring – provides continuous information about pressures within the brain
