M. Steven Jones begins this week, Monday, November 1 as University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center’s newly appointed president.

Mr. Jones joined University Hospitals in 2006 from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles where he served as a surgical service line director for the musculoskeletal and neuroscience departments for the hospital.

At University Hospitals (UH), Mr. Jones served as vice president of the musculoskeletal and neuroscience services and contributed to the development of the UH Neurological Institute.

He was later promoted to vice president of UH Geauga Medical Center primarily responsible for strategic planning and to oversee the operational management and control of all departments and functions of the hospital.

“We are excited about being able to promote one of our own into this critical leadership role within our health system,” said Fred C. Rothstein, MD, President of University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Executive Vice President of University Hospitals. “Steve’s influence has been immeasurable as has his proven record of excellence for improving vital standards of care for UH Geauga Medical Center. Our future remains bright with Steve a part of it.”

Mr. Jones also played a vital role in the strategic planning initiatives including the hospital system’s largest investment of resources in its history with UH’s Vision 2010 strategic plan. In addition to being a member of the senior leadership team, Mr. Jones managed quality and clinical outcomes, revenue growth and expense efficiency as well as compliance and teaching initiatives.

Under his guidance, UH Geauga Medical Center has been the recipient of many national recognitions for cardiovascular benchmarks as well as patient and medical safety indicators.

Also during his tenure, a hospital-based specialty practice was opened and clinical services were expanded in conjunction with UH’s Ireland Cancer Center, Neurological and Harrington-McLaughlin Heart & Vascular Institutes. Most recently, Mr. Jones created the Primary Care Institute which is a collaboration of hospital and independent physicians who work together to improve quality measures within the hospital as well as combine efforts to provide community benefit such as hosting screenings and medical lectures.

Mr. Jones began his career in health care in 1978 at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood, California as a management trainee and later became a clinical social worker with the same institution in 1983. By April of 1986, Mr. Jones became the director of rehabilitation/social services for the Hospital Home Health Care Agency in Torrance, California. Two years later he became the executive director of clinical services for The Hospital of the Good Samaritan in Los Angeles.

“University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center is in a wonderful position to continue its pattern of excellence in patient care as a result of our dedication to our staff, physicians and community,” Mr. Jones said. “I am honored to be a part of this hospital system and it is my intent to advance and continue to embrace our mission, vision and values as it will reflect my optimism for UH Geauga Medical Center’s promising and exciting future.”
