Neuromuscular Center physicians and scientists are involved in some of today’s most important research in neuromuscular diseases. 

Projects include:
Thymectomy in the treatment of myasthenia gravis
The center is one is one of a few centers in the country participating in an NIH-funded randomized trial testing the efficacy of thymectomy (surgery to remove the thymus gland) in the treatment of myasthenia gravis.

Diaphragmatic pacing for ALS
A trial of diaphragmatic pacing to ease breathing in ALS patients has included more than15 patients so far.  The study is funded by the FDA and is headed by Dr. Raymond Onders.

Adult Tay-Sachs Disease
Clinical trials on the treatment of adult Tay-Sachs Disease are ongoing, headed by Dr. Barbara Shapiro. For information on Tay-Sachs disease, please click here.

Epidemiology of Diabetes Intervention and Complication (EDIC)
EDIC is an NIH-sponsored multi-center, longitudinal, observational study designed to utilize important data from  1419 diabetic patients  studied in the 1980’s and 1990’s under the diabetes control and complication trial (DCCT).
