University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center receives grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure
University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center receives grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure GENEVA – University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center has been awarded with a $45,563 grant by The Northeast Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. The grant will assist in funding free clinical breast examinations, screening mammograms, and breast health education.
At UH Geneva Medical Center, the grant from Komen for the Cure will support the Ashtabula & Eastern Lake County Rural Underserved Women’s Project, an initiative to provide free clinical breast examinations and screening mammograms to uninsured women ages 40-64. The program also provides breast health education sessions for various community organizations such as schools, churches, senior centers, etc.
This is the seventh year that UH Geneva Medical Center has received grant funding from the Northeast Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Over the seven years, 289 women were provided with screening mammograms and multiple lives have been saved through this program.
“If diagnosed with breast cancer, patients receive state-of-the-art care and have access to resources of the Ireland Cancer Center,” said Amitabh Goel MD FACS, breast surgeon at UH Geneva Medical Center. “This program has been of tremendous benefit to our community and demonstrates our continued commitment to breast care.”
The program is administered by registered nurses that hold certification as Breast Cancer Patient Navigators and Breast Self Examination Instructors from the National Consortium of Breast Centers, Inc.
“I am proud of our Community Outreach Department that services the Geneva and Conneaut communities,” said Robert G. David, President of UH Geneva and Conneaut Medical Centers. “Almost every ninth-grade student in Ashtabula County learned how to detect breast lumps through our outreach of education. If we detect a lump sooner, rather than later, we have a much better chance to treat that patient. Our goal will be to educate all students about breast cancer awareness.”
