Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel bursts inside the brain. Damage to the brain can occur very quickly, either from the presence of the blood itself, or because of increased pressure on the brain.
This kind of stroke may also be caused by an aneurysm, a weak spot in an artery wall, which can grow over time and burst. Or,.a hemorrhagic stroke may happen when an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) ruptures and causes bleeding in the brain. (An AVM is an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein.)
Cancer is another disease that can cause bleeding in the brain, especially cancers that have metastasized (spread) to the brain from other organs, such as the breast or thyroid.
Hemorrhagic stroke may occur in people whose blood doesn’t clot well. It can also be caused by a build up in the arteries of a protein called amyloid, which makes the arteries more prone to bleeding. This is more common in elderly people
