There are real people behind the numbers of patients we see at University Hospitals. The African American community, for example, accounts for higher percentages of heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, lung cancer and female breast cancer than the general population. Members of this community must feel welcome when they come to University Hospitals to tackle these diseases – seeing themselves reflected in those who provide care.
The mission of the Minority House Staff Organization is to actively provide greater services to the minority population of greater Cleveland by participating in the recruitment of minority house staff and increasing the number of minority house staff at University Hospitals.
The organization serves as a social and peer support group as well as a link to career mentoring for minority house staff at University Hospitals of Cleveland and minority medical students at the Case Western School of Medicine. Through combined sponsorships and counseling efforts, the organization intends to help minority students avail themselves of the opportunities available to them while increasing efforts in minority recruitment.
The Minority House Staff Organization and University Hospitals co-hosts the New Minority Faculty and House Staff Welcome Reception and Dinner annually. The Reception and Dinner celebrate the addition of new minority faculty and house staff members at University Hospitals. This year’s reception and dinner will take place July 21, 2007.
