Dr. Ann Lyren

Dr. Anne LyrenDirector, Rainbow Center for Pediatric Ethics

Dr. Lyren has been a part of the Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital team since she began her residency in 1997.  She became the Director of the Rainbow Center for Pediatric Ethics in 2004.  Dr. Lyren is also an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics & Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University. She received her MD from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and her Master of Science degree in Philosophy and Biomedical Ethics from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland as a Rotary International Scholar.  Dr. Lyren is a cum laude graduate of Harvard University. 

Dr. Lyren is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Society for Bioethics & Humanities, the Ambulatory Pediatrics Association and the Pediatric Ethics Consortium.  She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and written several commentaries and book chapters related to ethical issues in pediatric medicine.

Besides directing the Rainbow Center for Pediatric Ethics, Dr. Lyren is chair of the Rainbow Ethics Committee, Celebration of Lives Program Committee, and Transfusions for Children Whose Parents Refuse Committee. She also serves on the ethics committees for University Hospitals and for MacDonald Women’s Hospital, as well as the Department of Pediatrics Institutional Review Board, the Pediatric Heart Transplant Steering Committee, Family Centered Care Steering Committee, and the Task Force on Pediatric Organ Donation after Cardiac Death. She has developed numerous ethics educational curricula for physicians and nurses at Rainbow and is a reviewer for Clinical Pediatrics and Pediatrics.
