A hernia results when there is a tear in the abdominal muscle. Organs, such as the intestine, can then push through the weakened muscle causing a hernia. This can cause pain, discomfort and a noticeable bulge under the skin. If the intestine gets caught in the hernia and loses its blood supply it can be a serious health risk to you. Symptoms tend to get worse by lifting heavy objects or over exertion during activities ranging from sports to gardening.
Talk to your primary care physician about treatment options. They’ll refer you to the University Hospitals Comprehensive Hernia Center where you’ll meet your care team that includes a hernia surgeon and, if appropriate, a plastic surgeon.
They’ll talk to you about your lifestyle and develop a treatment plan that works best for you. Your treatment plan will include steps to take before and after your surgery.
