Institute Overview

Turning Hope into Reality

Since it’s founding in 1969 with the establishment of the kidney transplant program, University Hospitals and Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospitals has performed more than 2,500 solid organ transplants for adults and children. The Transplant Institute unites a multidisciplinary team of specialists in the medical and surgical mission of treating patients with end-stage organ disease, including such potentially fatal conditions as heart, lung, liver and kidney failure, as well as diabetes. Transplant is one of many treatment options for patients with organ failure. As a team, we assess the patient to find the right path of treatment for his or her individual needs.

The Transplant Institute complements the national reputation of UH by offering individualized treatment in the patient-centered environment of Mather Pavilion. The Institute coordinates all of the necessary resources for the patient. That means the Institute’s team of experts brings their care and expertise to the patient in a single setting rather than requiring the patient to travel various routes to see specialists in multiple locations. The team includes an array of experts ranging from doctors and nurses to social workers and financial counselors. The program enables every patient to become an active participant throughout all phases of the transplant experience. Patients are guided by a highly-trained staff to expedite pre-transplant evaluation, inpatient consultations and outpatient follow-up after transplantation.

In addition, as one of the region’s leading academic medical centers, University Hospitals and its physicians conduct groundbreaking research and clinical trials to help refine the use of immunosuppressive drugs, reduce organ rejection episodes and improve patient outcomes. Results of these trials are published in medical journals disseminated throughout the world. As a result, the transplant team can offer patients advanced, innovative treatments, including clinical expertise not available outside a teaching setting.
