Overview
Dr LudersEpilepsy is a group of disorders that are all characterized by seizures. Epilepsy is often first recognized when you have a convulsion. However, seizures come in a variety of forms. Seizures are caused by sudden, intense bursts of electrical activity in the brain and can affect muscle control, movement, speech, vision, or awareness. Many people may not get a warning that a seizure is coming. The complexity of epilepsy and its impact on the brain and entire anatomy means you may need the expertise of many specialists to find the best treatment options.

At the Neurological Institute at University Hospitals, you will receive the compassionate expertise of a team of medical specialists who are trained in the chemistry and physiology of epilepsy and who are deeply committed to giving the highest quality care. At our Center, we coordinate the talents of many different kinds of epilepsy specialists, an arsenal of medical expertise that is not available from a single physician.

Our team includes:
  • Neurologists specializing in epilepsy (called epileptologists)
  • Neuroradiologists
  • Neurosurgeons
  • Psychiatrists
  • Neuropsychologists
  • Clinical nurse specialists

The Epilepsy Center at the Neurological Institute is a level IV center, the highest designation recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Experts here are among the best in the country. We have been caring for people with epilepsy for decades. Our researchers have contributed to the discovery and development of numerous effective therapies for epilepsy, including medications and surgical techniques.

The Epilepsy Center also has an EEG video monitoring unit, an entire unit for watching epilepsy patients to detect exactly when their seizures occur and what type of seizures they have. This unit – open 24 hours a day, seven days a week – is staffed by highly-skilled monitoring technologists observing patients at all times.
