CLEVELAND – University Hospitals Board of Directors has announced that Thomas F. Zenty III, Chief Executive Officer, University Hospitals, has agreed to serve as the health system’s leader for an additional five years, through December 2012.
Monte Ahuja, Chairman of the UH Board of Directors, said, “I join my Board colleagues in underscoring our support for Tom and his community focused, dynamic and results-driven leadership of our health system. We look forward to working with him over the next five years to continue the momentum he has established for creating a healthier community in Northeast Ohio, an integral part of our vision for University Hospitals in 2010 and beyond.”
Since joining University Hospitals (UH) in 2003 as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the health system, Mr. Zenty has worked closely with the Board of Directors, system leadership team, employees and community leaders to build a strong foundation for University Hospitals that will ensure the delivery of the highest quality patient-centered healthcare in Northeast Ohio and the nation.
Most notably, Mr. Zenty has led UH’s bold and historic strategic plan, Vision 2010. Under his guidance, UH has made great strides toward achieving this vision. This year, UH has completed construction of the UH Twinsburg Health Center and broken ground for the UH Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood. UH has also made significant investments to its main campus in Cleveland - UH Case Medical Center - including finalizing plans to build a new free-standing cancer hospital, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and Center for Emergency Medicine. UH continues to make significant investments in its community medical centers throughout the region.
During Mr. Zenty’s tenure, UH has bolstered its commitment to the community by providing charity care for the uninsured and underinsured as well as community health programs and screenings. In addition, as part of its mission To Heal, To Teach, To Discover, UH is actively engaged in un-funded research and education to advance treatment and medical breakthroughs. In 2006, this community reinvestment totaled over $181 million.
Under Mr. Zenty’s leadership, UH has increased its commitment to the communities it serves, achieved a positive net operating margin since 2004 and earned unprecedented philanthropic support, achieving more than $100 million for the health system’s clinical objectives and Vision 2010.
“Our remarkable progress has been facilitated in part by the financial turnaround Tom engineered in order to allow UH to continue to reinvest in the communities we serve,” added Mr. Ahuja. “In addition, Tom has established impressively strong ties in the community and is a passionate participant in strategic policy and planning affecting healthcare in Northeast Ohio and the nation.”
Mr. Zenty is a board member of numerous not-for-profit organizations in Northeast Ohio including BioEnterprise, Greater Cleveland Partnership, United Way of Northeast Ohio, Urban League of Northeast Ohio and Cuyahoga Community College Foundation. He is chairman of the board of the Health Research Educational Trust. He is a member of the Healthcare Institute, and is a member of the boards of the National Alliance for Health Information Technology, the University HealthSystem Consortium and CSA International. Additionally, Mr. Zenty serves on the Long Range Policy Committee of the American Hospital Association as well as the Advisory Panel on Health Care Delivery of the American Association of Medical Colleges.
