Outstanding Pharmacy Services and Programs

Under the guidance of the mission and values of University Hospitals, the Department of Pharmacy Services is dedicated to providing the highest quality of pharmaceutical care. Our pharmacy team of over 150 members consists of clinical pharmacists, clinical pharmacist specialists, certified pharmacy technicians and support staff. Our team is responsible for the safe and cost-effective use of medications through the application of specialized knowledge, skills and professional judgment.

Our team members serve as patient advocates when planning and implementing pharmaceutical care for our patients’ medical conditions. In addition to providing 24-hour clinical and distributive services, our team is committed to the education and development of the next generation of pharmacists through pharmacy medical education programs, which include practice experiences, residencies and internships.

Pharmacy Practice Model

The UH pharmacy team uses the decentralized pharmacy practice model. Our inpatient clinical pharmacists and specialists are stationed at patient care units and consult with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to address patient-specific drug therapy issues, among them drug selection, indications, side effects/adverse effects, drug interactions and product availability. To monitor medication outcomes and optimize drug therapy, our pharmacists perform drug use evaluations, follow drug usage guidelines, resolve patient medication issues and perform patient medication counseling.

UH employs the state-of-the-art computerized physician order entry (CPOE). Our pharmacists are responsible for verifying all medication orders entered into our CPOE system in an accurate and timely manner. Delivery of medications is accomplished through the use of automated dispensing cabinets (Omnicell), technical staff rounds or via the pneumatic tube system.

We offer a variety of educational programs to help train the next generation of pharmacists.
