According to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions most recent data (2013), did you know the following facts?

  • Heart disease and all cancers combined are the number 1 and 2 killers of women in the U.S.
  • Stroke and chronic respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma represent the number 3 and 4 killers, with stroke death being preventable in many cases
  • Lifetime major depressions are nearly twice as prevalent for women than men (21.3 percent vs. 12.7 percent).

We know that many disorders present differently in women, requiring doctors to approach a woman’s care plan differently. There are women specialists within our institute, such as UH Seidman Cancer Center, UH Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute, UH Neurological Institute, and UH Connor Integrative Health Network. UH has also developed specialty programs for women including in-vitro fertilization, bariatric and cosmetic vein procedures.

The UH Women’s Health Institute also knows that women have health care needs that are unique to women. We have partnered with our providers at University Hospitals MacDonald Women’s Hospital and the UH Breast Center to provide for these needs. MacDonald Women’s Hospital, the state's only hospital dedicated to women's health, offers services including high risk pregnancy care, women’s mental health, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries, as well as routine prenatal and gynecology care. The UH Breast Center team are leaders in technology and compassionate care. The breast care team at UH Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland, Ohio, offers leading-edge, personalized care, from cancer screening through diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.
