What is Neurologic Rehabilitation

Our neurologic specialists are experienced and/or board certified to treat neurological conditions. Therapists’ backgrounds may include completing a fellowship and certification to become a neuro clinical specialist (NCS), certification in neurodevelopment treatment (NDT) or having clinical training to treat disorders such as stroke, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, multiple sclerosis, ALS, or balance disorders.

PTNeuro Physical Therapy

May be helpful to improve walking, limb mobility, safe use of assistive device such as a wheelchair or walker, getting into or out of a car, bed, functional use of legs despite changes in muscle tone or pain.

OTNeuro Occupational Therapy

May be helpful to improve arm and hand coordination, functional reach, everyday tasks such as self-care or home management activities, adaptive equipment assessment and training to optimize independence with these tasks.

Neurological Clinical Specialists for Advanced Therapy

A neurological clinical specialist (NCS) is a specially trained physical therapist with advanced training in neurological physical therapy. After passing a board certification examination and meeting with stringent requirements, the American Board of Physical Therapist Specialists awards these therapists with the NCS credentials.

After a traumatic brain injury or with a progressive neurological condition, brain cells that are not injured can actually learn to control missing functionality for enhanced recovery and improved long-term health. Working with the referring physician, physical medicine doctor and other specialists at University Hospitals, neurological physical and occupational therapy specialists help evaluate the patient and create an individualized care plan that will help improve or restore mobility and functional skills to optimize a person’s independence.

Services Included in Neurological Rehabilitation

Cognitive Rehabilitation

Occupational therapists and speech language pathologists work with a multi-disciplinary team to focus on improving cognitive functions such as memory, planning, reasoning, or problem solving in everyday work, home management, self-care, or community tasks.

Amputee Rehabilitation

Amputee specialty therapists work closely with prosthetic team to help build a person’s confidence in applying and training to use their prosthetic to improve safety with mobility and function.

Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT)

Specially trained LSVT LOUD certified clinicians uses loudness training to bring the voice to an improved, healthy vocal loudness with no strain. Treatment improves respiratory, laryngeal and articulatory function to maximize speech intelligibility. LSVT certified and clinicians uses large, exaggerated movements that lead to smoother, safer movements and quality of life.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES): to help stimulate nerves to promote muscle contraction and movement. Therapists use as modality or training, or person may use device for function.

Neuro Com Balance Master: Advanced simulator for treatment and assessment of the vestibular, proprioceptive systems

Bioness: type of electrical stimulation for upper or lower limb to help open/close hand or facilitate leg movement to assist walking

Bioness Integrated Therapy System (BITS): software based therapy platform to challenge and assess, vision, motor, and balance deficiencies

Suspended/Unweighted Treadmill or System: used in balance or gait training for safety

Frenzel Goggles: used to track eye movements on computer screen with vestibular therapy and assessment.

Wheelchair Evaluations

Working closely with wheelchair vendors, occupational or physical therapists will help to select and customize the most appropriate seating system for long term use to improve posture, breathing, function, and lessen pain.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

For conditions related to dizziness due to vertigo, BPPV, head injury, inner ear disorders, headaches, or balance impairments, a physical therapist will assess balance, eye movements, gait and posture. More advanced need may require equipment such as a NeuroCom Balance Master and a certified vestibular therapist for more objective measurements to determine which specific body systems are affected. OT Driving Evaluations

2-hour simulated driving assessment includes testing of reaction time, physical abilities, visual perception and cognition to help determine driver readiness after disease or injury. This is assessment is simulated in clinic, not on the road.
