PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at UH Geauga Medical Center

Overview

Founded in 1952, University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center is a 226-bed, nonprofit, acute care facility providing care to residents of Geauga, Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Lake, Portage and Trumbull counties in Northeast Ohio. It is located on a picturesque 65-acre campus in the heart of Geauga County. Services encompass an array of inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical specialties (oncology, infectious disease, cardiology, neurology, ICU, orthopedics, women’s health, etc.), emergency care, and health and wellness education. State-of-the-art electronic medical record with computerized physician order entry is used.

Chardon, Ohio, is located in Northeast Ohio, and is the county seat of Geauga County. It is approximately 35 miles east of downtown Cleveland, and is widely recognized as the center of Ohio’s maple syrup industry. Centered at the crossroads of State Route 44 and U.S. Route 6, the City of Chardon’s Square features the county courthouse, numerous local businesses, charming retail shops, a public library, and a variety of eateries all within the relaxed setting of an historic walking district.

Pharmacy Residency

The purpose of the UH Geauga Medical Center PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is to graduate highly skilled pharmacists with the tools necessary to provide quality patient care as members of interprofessional health care teams. Emphasis will be placed on communication, lifelong learning, evidence-based medication management and safety in the unique setting of a community hospital, giving graduates a strong foundation to pursue careers as pharmacy clinicians or further training in a PGY2 residency.

  • Two available positions
  • ASHP accredited
  • Assist with precepting pharmacy students from Northeast Ohio Medical University, University of Findlay, University of Toledo and Ohio Northern University
  • Staffing component every other weekend

  • November: Research
  • December: Medication education
  • January: Elective
  • February: Elective
  • March: Oncology
  • April: Advanced internal medicine I
  • May: Elective
  • June: Advanced internal medicine II

The director and preceptors recognize the importance of tailoring the experiences to the resident’s personal career goals.

Elective Rotations Include, But Are Not Limited To:

  • Academia
  • Teaching certificates from NEOMED or the University of Findlay
  • Critical care
  • Infectious disease
  • Psychiatry
  • Family medicine
  • Cardiology
  • Residents may also choose to repeat a required rotation for additional experience

Longitudinal Experiences

In addition to scheduled rotations, the UH Geauga Medical Center PGY1 residency offers longitudinal experiences to further develop clinical skills:

  • Medication management clinic
  • Geriatrics clinic
  • Drug information
  • Medication safety/management
  • Pharmacy service every other weekend

Residency Program Application

Graduates of accredited Colleges of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and eligible for licensure in the state of Ohio may submit the following materials via PhORCAS to the program director for consideration for residency program admission:

  • Letter of intent

  • Official college transcripts
