Am I a Candidate?
Inspire® Therapy at University Hospitals Can Benefit Many Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea
To be a good candidate for Inspire therapy at University Hospitals, patients should have the following characteristics:
- 22 years of age or older
- Moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea
- Unable to use continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
- Has an advantageous palatal anatomy
Inspire therapy is most successful in patients with a body mass index (BMI) less than 32.
An updated polysomnogram or sleep study is necessary prior to consideration of candidacy.
Outpatient Procedure for Inspire Therapy Implant
For most patients, the Inspire system can be implanted during an outpatient procedure. Patients may experience some pain and swelling at incision sites but should be able to return to non-strenuous activities after a few days. Approximately one month after implantation, patients return to their physician’s office where personalized stimulation settings are established and patients are trained to use the handheld Inspire sleep remote.
