Huntington’s Disease Clinic

Offering Expert Evaluation and Treatment for Patients with Huntington’s Disease

University Hospitals Neurological Institute is pleased to offer expert diagnosis and treatment for patients and families at the Huntington’s Disease Clinic. This interdisciplinary clinic, offered at University Hospitals University Suburban Health Center in South Euclid, provides neurology, psychiatry and genetics evaluation of this inherited neurological disease.

What is Huntington’s Disease?

Huntington’s disease is a neurodegenerative genetic disorder that affects muscle coordination and leads to cognitive decline and dementia. It typically becomes noticeable in middle age but can occur in almost any age group. The disease is caused by a gene mutation so any child of an affected parent has a 50 percent chance of inheriting the disease. Symptoms include abnormal movements, behavioral and psychiatric issues, cognitive changes and balance problems. Treatments are available for some symptoms of Huntington’s disease.

Prescreening Visits

UH Neurological Institute also offers prescreening examinations to patients’ adult family members. Although a family member may not display any of the symptoms of Huntington’s disease, screenings are an important tool in early detection and ultimately managing the disease.
