Electromyography Preparation

The patient referred for EMG testing will need to be aware of the following test preparation:

  • The patient’s skin should be clean without lotions, oils or creams
  • The patient can take all of their medications as prescribed by their referring physician with the exception of: Warfarin (Coumadin), Botox, Mestinon. These patients may need to have their medications altered by their referring physician to obtain optimal test results.

There are no aftereffects from the EMG test and the patient can return to their usual activities immediately upon leaving the laboratory. The test takes approximately 1-1 ½ hours.
