Leading Procedures Optimize Quality of Life for Stroke Patients

The Comprehensive Stroke Center at University Hospitals Neurological Institute in Cleveland, Ohio offers advanced services for stroke treatment, including:

  • Advanced treatments
  • Ablation of aneurysms and other arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
  • Angioplasty and stenting of extracranial and intracranial stenoses
  • Emergency treatment of acute stroke or vasospasm
  • Treatment of complex vascular malformations previously deemed inoperable using knifeless procedures like Gamma Knife and CyberKnife® stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Repair of aneurysms, vascular reformations, diseased-artery bypass, carotid revascularization and EC-IC bypass procedures
  • These leading-edge treatments often result in shorter recovery times, less risk and overall better outcomes than other older therapies. Because the newer treatments avoid the complications associated with major operations, they maximize the likelihood of a full recovery for many patients.

Minimally Invasive Endovascular Therapy Reduces Damage from Stroke

One of the most innovative advances in stroke treatment involves performing minimally invasive procedures on the brain and blood vessels through endovascular therapy. Using miniature tools, physicians create tiny openings in the body and pass the tools they need to repair neurological damage.

These techniques allow surgeons to mend stroke damage from within the blood vessel rather than having to cut it open via external surgery. The delicate procedures are guided by highly sophisticated, real-time brain monitoring and neuro-imaging equipment.

The Comprehensive Stroke Center offers the following endovascular treatments:

  • Carotid bypass procedures used to improve blood flow to the brain when normal routes have been altered by surgery
  • Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), to be delivered straight to the source of the clot, instead of waiting for it to flow from a vein to the brain
  • Cerebrovascular repairs using microcatheters to deliver microstents, bioactive microcoils and liquid adhesives
  • Stent remodeling of vessels for aneurysm therapy
