University Hospitals Is the First Hospital in Ohio to Offer Innovative Robotic Angioplasty Technology

University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute’s Interventional Cardiovascular Center is one of only a few sites nationwide and the only hospital in Ohio to offer CorPath Robotic Angioplasty, an innovative FDA-approved technology that combines the benefits of coronary angioplasty with the precision of robotics.

Coronary angioplasty is a procedure used to open clogged heart arteries. The procedure involves temporarily inserting and blowing up a tiny balloon to help widen the clogged artery and restore healthy blood flow to the heart. Often, a small wire-mesh tube, called a stent, is permanently inserted to help prop the artery open and decrease the chance of it narrowing again.

If a stent is not placed accurately during angioplasty, the patient may have to undergo another procedure. However, robotic angioplasty increases precision down to millimeter accuracy, ensuring that the physician places the stent exactly where it needs to go.

Robotic angioplasty also gives the physician enhanced visualization and control, which can lead to shorter procedures and less exposure to radiation.

Physicians at UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute are working closely with the company that developed this technology to develop a second-generation robot that will leverage intravascular imaging to even further optimize the procedure and outcomes.
