Clinical Research and Clinical Trials

Revolutionary Discoveries Through Ongoing Clinical Research at the Electrophysiology Center

At University Hospitals, the commitment to exceptional patient care begins with revolutionary medical discoveries. The physician-scientists at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute’s Electrophysiology Center and Atrial Fibrillation Center participate in leading-edge investigational clinical trials evaluating the latest advancements in medications, strategies and technologies.

Our strong emphasis on translational cardiovascular medicine and surgery means that newly discovered drugs, innovative treatments, and medical advances transfer quickly from the research phase to actual patient care.

Leading-Edge Innovations

Through UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute’s Research & Innovation Center, the esteemed physician-scientists at the Electrophysiology Center and Atrial Fibrillation Center have been leaders in the following:

  • Among a few medical centers worldwide utilizing a novel, minimally invasive left ventricular assist device called Impella® to facilitate the treatment of complex ventricular arrhythmia (VT), possibly paving the way for improved interventions for VT in the future
  • Chosen as one of the first sites in the U.S. to participate in a clinical trial comparing the safety and effectiveness of an investigational left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion device compared to warfarin or dabigatran to prevent thromboembolism in patients with nonvalvular AF
  • Use of a novel cryoablation system to isolate the source for irregular heartbeat by freezing the opening of the pulmonary veins – this procedure has shown to be safe and successful for patients with intermittent or paroxysmal AF
  • For patients with lead infection or malfunction, UH Cleveland Medical Center is a high-volume center performing lead extraction. Utilizing a laser, leads are typically extracted through a small incision near the pacer/ICD pocket.

Leading-Edge Device Therapy

University Hospitals is involved in clinical trials utilizing leading-edge and novel device therapies for the management of heart disease.

We work closely with our Advanced Heart Failure Center, which is Joint Commission-certified in heart failure and ventricular assist device (VAD) and has a level of expertise achieved by less than 1 percent of hospitals. We treat patients with stage C/D heart failure, transplant recipients and those with VAD support to eradicate or control both atrial fibrillation and life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Patients receiving cardiac resynchronization therapy participate in specialized follow-up and achieve better than reported outcomes.

Frontrunners in Clinical Research

Our board-certified physicians are leaders in their respective fields and their ongoing clinical trials continue to advance medical progress. Our strong emphasis on translational cardiovascular medicine and surgery means that newly developed drugs, treatments and medical advances transfer more rapidly from the research stage to actual patient care, improving outcomes for many.
