University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute is home to some of the most innovative research in the United States. Its rich history dates back to the early 20th century when our clinicians pioneered the first surgical treatments of coronary artery disease, the use of defibrillation for resuscitation, and new methods for measuring blood pressure. More recently, our researchers have played an influential role in the pharmacologic control of blood pressure in reducing cardiovascular events, the clinical application of nitrosothiols in cardiovascular disease, highlighting the role of a family of factors termed Kruppel-like factors (KLFs) in diverse biological processes, and demonstrating the importance of environmental factors in the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic disease.
