Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center Menu
At the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, our multidisciplinary team offers a full spectrum of specialized care for adults with congenital heart disease.
This partnership between the heart experts at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Congenital Heart Collaborative and UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute provides seamless care for congenital heart disease patients throughout their lifespan.
Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect in the U.S., affecting about one in 110 births. Due to advancements in medical and interventional therapies, more babies born with heart defects are now living into adulthood. In fact, a new study shows about 1.4 million adults are living with congenital heart disease in the U.S. today, with more adults alive with congenital heart disease than children.
Individuals born with a heart defect should be cared for by a trained congenital heart disease specialist throughout their lifetime; but in the U.S., it is estimated that fewer than 10 percent of adult patients receive this recommended care.
Even with successful surgery early in life, adults with congenital heart disease still need continued monitoring and perhaps further operations and medications. In addition, related problems such as high blood pressure, obesity and acquired heart disease can develop in these individuals.
At the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center, our team is specially trained in the comprehensive care of ACHD and understands the effects it can have on all aspects of a patient’s health. Because our team has expertise in treating both pediatric and adult heart conditions, we have the experience to treat issues arising from the original heart defect as well as any related conditions patients acquire as adults.
