Senior ER

Offering Specialized Emergency Room (ER) Services for Older Adults

University Hospitals Bedford and Richmond medical centers, campuses of UH Regional Hospitals, are the first hospitals in the region to enhance their Emergency Departments to better address the unique needs of older adults. The Senior ERs include important features like safety rails, visual and auditory aids and skid-resistant floors. Most significantly, the facility is fully staffed by board-certified doctors and nurses with specific training in the care of older adults. The Senior ERs are open 24 hours a day to provide expert care for seniors.

Multidisciplinary Approach

The multidisciplinary team at University Hospitals Senior ER seeks to understand the whole person in order to create personalized treatment plans that lead to better outcomes. Our ER doctors evaluate multiple aspects of the patient’s health to find the best treatment option. Our doctors will:

  • Check for pre-existing conditions
  • Evaluate multiple medications and nutritional needs
  • Screen patients for additional health concerns

Geriatric Nurse Specialists

The Senior ER is a NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) designated facility. Our center is staffed with a team of highly trained nurses who recognize and address the physical, emotional and functional challenges older patients face during hospital stays. All our Senior ER nurses are GENE (Geriatric Emergency Nurse Education) certified, making them uniquely qualified to promote the staff sensitivity and interdisciplinary teamwork that is essential to high quality senior care.
