Research Leaders in the Full Spectrum of Dermatology
The University Hospitals’ Department of Dermatology emphasizes its commitment to research and training in research. Approximately 1/3 of the external revenue is derived from research and is split between NIH/other federal awards, clinical research contracts, clinical central reference lab contracts, and translational research contracts (human subject intervention plus mechanism of action lab-based studies).
Our faculty are major leaders in the clinical care and research in areas including blistering diseases, skin cancer surgery, melanoma, supportive oncodermatology, cutaneous lymphoma, cancer epidemiology, translational bioinformatics, psoriasis, dermatopathology, atopic dermatitis/eczema, contact dermatitis, autoimmunity, mycology, and immuno-therapeutics.
Nationally Ranked Program
An important measure of the quality and national recognition of a program is the ability to obtain research grant funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In both amount of funding and number of grants per department, the Department of Dermatology consistently ranks in the top 15 nationally for each of the past 26 years. Because NIH funding is so intensely competitive, it is very gratifying to obtain such recognition that our skin diseases research and training programs are among the premier efforts in the nation. This level of ranking recognizes the unique depth and breadth of our initiatives in advancing dermatologic health for our patients.
Multi-Institutional Collaboration
The Department integrates with services provided by the Harrington Discovery Institute, the multi-institutional Clinical & Translational Research Center and the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center grants to enhance clinical research and research training of physicians and scientists.
