Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Specialized Care for Patients with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Our lymphoma specialists at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland manage the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma through a very specialized approach. As one of the most common blood cancers, the prognosis and treatment of lymphoma is highly dependent upon determining the exact type and characterization of malignant cells and the extent of the disease.

Treatment Determined by Category of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

As part of the hematologic malignancies tumor board, our lymphoma team determines the best course of treatment on an individual basis, keeping in mind the complexity of the disease and the unique needs of each patient. The treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma can be better understood by the sub-categories of the disease:

  • Slower growth lymphoma: After determining the rate of disease progression and degree of symptoms, our lymphoma experts may recommend a combination of treatments that could include chemotherapy, immunotherapy and occasional radiation therapy.
  • Aggressive: The most common group of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, treatment can be expected to begin within several weeks of diagnosis, and may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy and possibly radiation therapy.
  • Extremely aggressive: With very aggressive or rapidly growing lymphoma, our lymphoma specialists take an aggressive approach to care. One clinical team directs and follows the patient’s care, so the same physician team works through diagnosis and treatment for continuity of care.
  • Very rare lymphomas: With very rare and more complex types of lymphoma, each patient will be evaluated to determine which specialists will be a part of the care team, depending on the progression of the disease. The team may include neurologists, gastroenterologists, dermatologists and other specialists. For more complex cases, access to lymphoma-specific clinical trials is a critical part of treatment.

For all types of lymphomas, clinical trials may be considered. Stem cell transplant may be necessary, with the decision made on an individualized basis.
