The Day Before Surgery

University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center Provides Critical Details Regarding Presurgery Care

The day before a scheduled kidney cancer surgery, the patient will receive a phone call from the Urologic Oncology Center to confirm the time of his or her surgical appointment. Patients who do not receive this call by 3 p.m. on that day should call 216-844-4831 to find out when they should arrive.

Individuals should arrive several hours prior to the scheduled surgery.

Abstaining from Food and Drink

Patients should not drink or eat anything after midnight the evening prior to the scheduled surgery.

Bowel Preparation

The day before the surgical procedure, patients need to take a bowel preparation medication (magnesium citrate or GoLYTELY). Since this medicine empties the patient's bowels, he or she should stay close to home during this time.
