Preoperative Tests

University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center Physicians Plan the Best Possible Course of Treatment for Patients

Depending on the patient's current health condition and the procedure selected to treat his or her kidney cancer, the UH Seidman Cancer Center surgeon may choose to schedule a preadmission testing appointment. The main purpose of this visit is to assess the individual's physical condition prior to surgery, as well as to help UH Seidman Cancer Center team provide the best care during the actual surgical procedure.

An administrator from the UH Seidman Cancer Center surgeon's office will assign a patient his or her appointment time. If there is any conflict with the arranged appointment, patients should call 1-866-UH4-CARE to reschedule as soon as possible.

Patients should bring the following items to their preadmission testing appointment:

  • Name and contact information of all physicians the patient sees on a regular basis
  • A list of past surgical procedures
  • A list of current medications, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements
  • A list of questions about the process or procedure

On the day of the preassessment testing visit, the patient should take his or her medication as prescribed by the physician. The Urologic Oncology Center requests that patients eat breakfast or their other regularly scheduled meals prior to arrival for preadmission testing. Fasting is not required unless specified by the individual's physician.

Patients might have one or more of the following tests depending on what the physician orders:

  • A urine sample
  • Pulse and blood pressure assessment
  • An EKG
  • Blood work
  • An anesthesia evaluation
  • Other services as needed
